Many thanks to everyone who replied to my posting.

I asked what how people record, what format they use to store material,
and how requests are generated.

Summary:

Out of the 7 replies all of them receive on digital boxes, two use Sky in
addition to this, and one uses analogue alongside digital.

Recording onto DVD was standard, and in 4 cases it is via the recorder’s
memory or a server. Two institutions kept material on a server beyond
transfer to DVD, while one streams high-demand material through the
catalogue. One keeps the option to record onto VHS.

Library and academic staff generate requests, and one institution accepts
requests from students as well, but prioritises those from academics.

So, recording onto DVD is standard, and storage on a server is
increasingly common. No big surprises here, but this has given me some
good ammunition for the review of our service.
