‘New Frontiers in the Knowledge Economy: Firms, Workers, Policy and
Methodology’
Organizers: Yael Levitte, ILR School, Cornell University, Sharmistha
Bagchi-Sen, Department of Geography, SUNY Buffalo
The knowledge economy is crucial to our understanding of regional growth
and development. Firms in industries such as biotechnology,
semiconductors, media or information create as well as transmit
knowledge. Decades of research have documented the importance of networks
(e.g. universities, non-profit, and venture capital) and spillover
effects to the development of a knowledge base in a region. Similarly, a
large body of work has both celebrated and critiqued the geographic
clustering of high tech firms in few locales (e.g., Silicon Valley, Route
128 or the Research Triangle). Recognizing that firm development is a
social process, much research has also been dedicated to understand the
value and price of social relationships to high tech firms and to
contextual factors that promote social relationships in a knowledge-based
economy.
The literature on high tech industries and their contribution to their
regional economies draws on an interdisciplinary research agenda. In this
session, we seek to bring together a diverse, interdisciplinary panel to
discuss new frontiers in the study of knowledge-based economies. This
session aims to highlight:
- The organization of innovation in knowledge-based sectors
- Work and workers in the knowledge economy
- The status of women in knowledge-based sectors
- New policy directions for the knowledge economy
- The governance of high tech city-regions
- Role of non-profit organizations in the knowledge economy
- New methodological directions to understand the dynamism in a
knowledge economy
Accepted papers will need to be registered online on the AAG website..
