28th August 2007: ESDS International launches Linking Macro and Micro Data e-learning materials

ESDS International, led by MIMAS based at the University of Manchester is please to announce the
launch of the Linking International Macro and Micro Data (LIMMD) e-learning materials.

What are they?

The e-learning materials are a comprehensive course on linking macro and micro datasets. Each unit
has been written by a subject specialist and has been designed as a self guided teaching resource
containing extensive information on the topic, examples, teaching datasets and step-by-step hands on
activities. The units are as follows:

Unit 1 - The basics. Written by Dr Celia Russell, MIMAS, The University of Manchester
Unit 2 - Making cross-national comparisons using macro data. Written by Mr Dave Fysh, University of
Portsmouth
Unit 3 - Making cross-national comparisons using micro data. Written by Mrs Siobhan Carey,
Department for International Development
Unit 4 - Combining macro and micro data. Written by Mr Steve Fisher, Trinity College, University of
Oxford
Unit 5 - Multilevel modelling using macro and micro data. Written by Dr Mark Tranmer, CCSR, The
University of Manchester

Who can use it?

The course is targeted specifically at post graduates and researchers but may also be of interest to
undergraduates. It is freely available for all to use but access to any of the macro international
datasets at ESDS International are restricted to those from UK Further and Higher Education
Institutions.

How to access?

The LIMMD e-learning materials can be accessed from the ESDS International website:
http://www.esds.ac.uk/international/support/learning.asp

and are also available in Jorum, a free online repository service for
teaching and support staff in UK Further and Higher Education Institutions.

LIMMD Project Background

The Linking International Macro and Micro Data (LIMMD) project was funded as part of the Economic
and Social Research Council (ESRC) Researcher Development Initiative (RDI) to raise awareness,
provide training and support for researchers and postgraduate students in the use of the
inter-related survey and aggregate data resources that can be accessed through the Economic and
Social Data Service (ESDS) International. The aim of the year long project was to develop a course
on linking macro and micro datasets to be delivered in both online and face-to-face formats. The two
workshops took place in Manchester on the 11th December 2006 and 25th April 2007. Both were well
attended and provided useful feedback for the further development of the online materials.
