This is an excellent point. I would actually favour a moratorium on 
conferences as well as publications for at least two years, and the 
latter is another little noticed contributor to CO2 emissions (never 
mind the timber and toxic chemicals trade). This would accomplish two 
things: a reduction in academics' contribution to environmental 
degradation and a general strike against absurdities like the REA and 
unreasonable tenure-track expectations, which also generally penalise 
women academics and those (still too few) male academics that also take 
on parental responsibilities and other socially reproductive, unpaid
labour.
