NEW contact details / Extended deadline / Please excuse X-Postings: PhD Position Environmental Governance / Land Use Change in Java (Indonesia) The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology in Bremen (ZMT) is an independent research institute linked with the Leibniz association. A PhD position, starting October 15th 2007 or soon thereafter is available as part of the social sciences team. The candidate will contribute to the ongoing Indonesian-German SPICE programme (Science for the Protection of Indonesian coastal ecosystems) as part of its research on “Livelihood strategies and governance in coastal social-ecological systems”. The candidate will work in Bremen/Germany and carry out field research in Central Java/Indonesia, with a strong focus on the Segara Anakan Lagoon and its surroundings. Comparative work in other regions of Java is possible. The PhD project aims at: • advancing our understanding of the social and socioeconomic dynamics shaping the present and forseeable future of the Segara Anakan Lagoon; • identifying major drivers of land use change upstream and around the lagoon and analysing their root causes; • identifying sources and patterns of conflict, vulnerability and resilience; • analysing relevant legal texts, institutions and administrative mechanisms in the context of decentralisation; • analysing and exploring the options of an improved environmental governance, taking key stakeholders into account. The successful candidate should: - have relevant social scientific knowledge with regards to theories and methods, and be willing to work in close collaboration with natural scientists; - be able to read, speak and write English to a high scientific standard (TOEFL paper-based test score of 600 points, computer-based test score of 250 points, IELTS score of no less than 6.0 in each band); - be willing to spend longer periods in Java.
