starting October 15th 2007 or soon thereafter is available as part of the
social sciences team. The candidate will contribute to the ongoing
Indonesian-German SPICE programme (Science for the Protection of Indonesian
coastal ecosystems) as part of its research on “Livelihood strategies and
governance in coastal social-ecological systems”. The candidate will work in
Bremen/Germany and carry out field research in Central Java/Indonesia, with
a strong focus on the Segara Anakan Lagoon and its surroundings. Comparative
work in other regions of Java is possible.

The PhD project aims at:
• advancing our understanding of the social and socioeconomic dynamics
shaping the present and forseeable future of the Segara Anakan Lagoon;
• identifying major drivers of land use change upstream and around the
lagoon and analysing their root causes;
• identifying sources and patterns of conflict, vulnerability and resilience;
• analysing relevant legal texts, institutions and administrative mechanisms
in the context of decentralisation;
• analysing and exploring the options of an improved environmental
governance, taking key stakeholders into account.

The successful candidate should:
- have relevant social scientific knowledge with regards to theories and
methods, and be willing to work in close collaboration with natural scientists;
- be able to read, speak and write English to a high scientific standard
(TOEFL paper-based test score of 600 points, computer-based test score of
250 points, IELTS score of no less than 6.0 in each band);
- be willing to spend longer periods in Java.
Command of the Indonesian language would be an advantage.

The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology is an equal opportunity employer. The
post is for two years initially with the possibility of extension for a
third year. Payment is according to the German public wage agreement (at 50%
of TVL Entgeltgruppe 13).
