From Heritage Link Update 121: International Slavery Museum opens in Liverpool UNESCO's designated International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade, 23rd August, was marked by the opening of the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool - the first museum of its type in the UK. It shares premises with the Merseyside Maritime Museum at Liverpool's Albert Dock just yards away from the dry docks where 18th century slave trading ships were repaired and fitted out. For Ministers' comments see http://www.communities.gov.uk/news/corporate/440532 The year has been marked by plenty of activity in the heritage world: the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded over £13 million to more than 145 bicentenary projects, much of it has gone to small, community groups, who can focus specifically on local stories.
