Hi Kate,
It was likely used as a pesticide for the woolen
industry. It could also have been used as a bleaching agent and fulling
agent for wool, because it is strongly oxidising. Here is a word doc
on some historical use and some EPA tox data, which may be useful. It
seems it may have short term effects from direct contact, such as skin burning,
and i wouldn't drink it.
Sorry to ask the obvious but I take it there was no label on
the bottle?
