Subject: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] 'the world is watching': Australian Psychological Society / USA / torture

Dear Fellow List Members,

Art Veno sent the following message to mark (Burton) and me. The contents are self explanatory and in my view urgent and serious and you may wish to consider acting upon Art's request

Subject: Australian Psychology Association Conference

Greetings David and Mark

As you are likely aware, Gerald Koocher has been invited by the APS Conference Organising Committe as our invited international speaker. Some Australian psychologists are concerned that 'deals are being done' to have the APS sanction both its members use of torture and support the American's position on this issue. The Conference is scheduled for the 25th - 27th of September, so the lead times are very short. I sincerely apologise for this late notice and request. However, we have been trying the straightforward channels of dealing with our Society. The result has been that Professor Paul Wilson and I have been conveniently 'dropped' from the official programme. (As I was scheduled to receive an award for distinguished contribution from the APS, I am unclear if that will proceed given my activist profile on this issue as it does not appear on the Conference Programme.)

In any event we have managed to organize APS Members and Koocher to hold a public forum on the evening of the 26th. We will also make our position very clear at the AGM.

I write to you requesting that you arrange to post via your list server the petition below. Any of your subscribers who feel that they can sign the petition will help in getting the APS to understand that 'the world is watching' and actions should be made to clearly distance our society from that of the United States and clearly state that the Society condemns the involvement of its members in the practice of torture.
