PhD Studentship

GWR and Gloucestershire Archives fully funded PhD Studentship:
The Ivor Gurney Archive

The University of Exeter (School of Arts, Language and Literatures / Centre for South West Writing), in collaboration with the University of Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire Archives, has recently been awarded funding from Great Western Research for a three-year doctoral research studentship on the work of the Gloucester-born poet and composer Ivor Gurney (1890-1937).

The primary aim of this PhD studentship is to produce a comprehensive and accessible on-line catalogue of the range of unpublished material retained in the Gurney Archive at Gloucestershire Archives. In addition, the student will be required to interpret and critically evaluate archival resources and to initiate, develop and disseminate relevant, high-level research in the field. The student will also identify hitherto unpublished material for publication and will work with other parties in order to ensure the wider understanding both of Gurney's work and of his importance to the cultural life of the South West region.

The PhD researcher will primarily be based at the archives in Gloucester, although supervision, training, mentoring and additional research will take place at the Universities of Exeter and Gloucestershire and elsewhere as appropriate. Under the terms of the GWR studentship scheme, the successful applicant will benefit from opportunities to work closely with expert staff at Gloucestershire Archives, thereby gaining relevant professional training and experience.

Applicants will normally have an MA or equivalent in a relevant discipline and should be able to demonstrate an interest in the literature and culture of the period and/or region.

The PhD will commence on 1 January 2008. UK level fees will be paid as part of the studentship, together with a maintenance grant which will match the standard AHRC rate. For further information or informal discussion about the position, please contact one of the following: Professor Tim Kendall (Email [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>), Dr John Hughes (Email [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>; Telephone 01242 714712), Dr Jo Gill (Email [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>; Telephone 01392 264233) or Julie Courtenay (Email [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>; Telephone 01452 425297).
