Senior Research Fellow in Road Safety Research

The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) is seeking to appoint a Senior
Research Fellow to join the ITS research group engaged with road safety.
This permanent post could suit someone with either an engineering or
psychology background who is keen to work in a strong interdisciplinary
environment, but who also has the ability to build up their own research
interests across these areas. This will be a position equivalent in
standing to an academic post and is available from the beginning of
January 2008 or earlier if appropriate.

You should have a postgraduate qualification, preferably in Psychology,
Human Factors or Engineering and a PhD, or equivalent research experience,
in a driving related field would be desirable. Good quantitative data
analysis and experimental design skills are required as is an enthusiasm
for all aspects of research and scholarship. You should have a proven
ability to attract and identify sources of external research income and
demonstrate the potential to develop high levels of esteem at
international level for your research profile into the future. An ability
to develop, sustain and enhance an international reputation for
publications in peer reviewed journals is also essential for this post.

The Senior Research Fellow will initially contribute to new and existing
projects already won by the Safety group, sponsored by both EPSRC and the
EU commission. A commitment to working collaboratively within the team is
thus expected as is an ability to independently lead and manage research
projects. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential
in order to liaise effectively with potential funding bodies and clients,
as well as presenting research outputs to the wider academic community.
Applicants should also have the potential to develop research leadership
skills within ITS and be willing to mentor and develop less experienced
research staff.

Although there are not specific teaching duties related to the post, we
would encourage applicants to become involved with supervision of Masters
dissertations and potentially PhD students. Previous experience of
student supervision would therefore be desirable.
