India and Pakistan 2007: BBC Archive resources
This site was created by the BBC to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the partition of India and creation of Pakistan. As a trial service it provides free access to a great collection of historical images, video clips and films relating to the history of India and Pakistan from the BBC archives. They include audiofiles of BBC radio broadcasts (including original materials from 1947) historic documentaries and interviews with key figures and some contemporary commentary on the impact of independence on the region. Topics covered include colonialism and the British empire; Indian independence, life and identity. Materials also related to key figures such as M. Gandhi; Nehru and Lord Mountbatten. Technical and copyright details are displayed on the website.

Human rights: 800 years of human rights in the United Kingdom explored using original documents from the National Archives

An excellent online exhibition created by the British national Archives. It provides free access to a large collection of full text primary source materials of interest for the academic study of the history of human rights in the UK from 1215-1945. Users may browse the timeline of key events, view supporting images and read some background text. There is also a glossary of terms. Documents include extracts from the Magna carta; peasants revolts; womens rights and materials relating to trade unions and the struggle for human rights. GovTalks
GovTalks is an interesting example of web 2.0 technology enabling the sharing of online video content. it provides free access to a growing collection of political videos. Members can share and upload examples. The main emphasis is upon American politics and foreign policy. However, there are also examples from other areas of the world. A wide range of topics are covered including: Iraq; the foreign policy of George W. Bush; 2008 presidential elections and the war on terrorism. The site includes many examples of interesting academic discussions; news programmes as well as campaign materials. Some materials are also available on YouTube. Copyright and technical details are displayed on the website.

Caring on the Home Front
Caring on the Home Front is a multimedia site which offers insight into the social history of life on the Home Front during the second world war 1939-1945. It focuses on oral history interviews with Home Front volunteers who served in the Joint War Organisation (JWO), a partnership between the British Red Cross and St. John Ambulance; offering fascinating insight into their experiences, lives and Red Cross voluntary work during this period. The site is subdivided into themes which include: air raids (coverage of the London Blitz); voluntary work; fundraising and prisoners of war. Each section includes text, photographs and some audio, film and video clips. The site is designed to be of particular value to school children and student's including a teacher's section with lesson plans and curriculum guidance.

2012 watchdog: The Taxpayers' Alliance
This blog was launched by UK pressure group the TaxPayers' Alliance to provide commentary and criticism of the cost of the 2012 London Olympic games to British tax payers. It includes news stories, commentary and reports criticising the budgets and economic funding of the games. All materials published since July 2007 can be accessed from the website.

Global Crisis Atlas
The Global Crisis Atlas is maintained by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. It aims to increase public awareness of contemporary conflicts and security crises by providing free access to an online collection of maps. These are provided at country and thematic level. Themes include ethnic conflict; refugees, humanitarian aid distribution and mappings of current crisis regions. Each map provides details on date of publication, scale and source of information. Some satellite maps are accessible.Technical and copyright information is displayed on the website. Certain maps are offered to subscribers only.

This website, part of the EU's main Europa site, "offers information on the latest developments of the European Union institutional reform." It gives a complete overview of the stages leading up to a new Treaty in 2007. There are links to various key meetings and to the European Constitution.

25 years of political influence: the records of the Human Rights Campaign
The Human Rights Campaign is a leading American organisation which has worked to achieve equality on behalf of lesbian, gay male, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans since 1980. This site is hosted by Cornell University Library’s Human Sexuality Collection.It provides information on the historical manuscripts of the group and free access to an online exhibition of some of its key primary source documents and campaign materials. It includes digital images of some of its founding documents, campaign leaflets, badges and photographs of gay rights events and activists. Also included are some digital images of book covers and documents covering early/ historical attitudes towards homosexuality and homosexuals. The site also offers suggested bibliographies of further readings for students.

Australian Screen education collection: history film clips
Australian Screen aims to provide information and free access to materials relating to the Australian film and television industry, from its earliest days to the present and Australian audiovisual heritage. Project partners include the Australian Government; Australian Film Commission and national Film and Sound Archive. It includes free access to several hundred online film clips Australian feature films, documentaries, TV programs, shorts, home movies, newsreels, advertisements, other historical footage, and sponsored films produced over the last 100 years, with curators’ notes and other information about each title. The educational section is specially designed for educational use with suggested teacher's notes. The collection on history includes materials relating to political history; colonisation; famous prime ministers; contact with aborigines and the social history of Australia. technical and copyright information is displayed on the website.

Proceedings of the Old Bailey- 1674 to 1834
The website of the Proceedings of the Old Bailey provides a searchable online version of the Proceedings produced by the Humanities Research Institute, University of Sheffield and the higher education Digitisation Service, University of Hertfordshire. This online version currently contains historical and legal background to trials at the Old Bailey as well as the accounts of over 22,000 criminal trials held at London's central criminal court, and aims to cover from 1674 to 1834 on completion of the project. It provides "digital images of the 60,000 original pages of the Proceedings" and a special section for schools. The Proceedings can be searched by keyword, name, date, place, crime and verdict and punishment. It also contains statistical search, advanced search, or links to other materials relating to the Old Bailey Proceedings. There is background information to life in eighteenth century London covering communities, policing, crime, trial procedures, judges, juries and punishment. There are links to notable trials, information about the Proceedings and sources of other books and documents dealing with Old Bailey trials. This online version is free of charge for non-commercial use and many of the materials are presented in HTML format.
