FACE (Forum for Access and Continuing Education) seminars around the UK

We at FACE are keen to organise and promote seminars throughout the UK to facilitate and encourage research and good practice in access, widening participation, and lifelong learning.

The following seminars will be held over the coming months.

Responding to Leitch: implications for adult learners and community regeneration 

 

Tuesday, 11th September, University of Glamorgan, Wales

 

This seminar will focus on responses to the Leitch Report: how it will affect learners and communities within Wales and in the UK in general. Keynote speaker is Rob Humphreys, Director for Wales, Open University in Wales, and the event is hosted by Professor Danny Saunders and his team, University of Glamorgan. Workshops will be relevant for all those interested in formal and informal learning in the community, the workplace, as well as those working with younger and older people. 

 

First Generation Students into Higher Education

 

Tuesday 23 October, central London 

 

This seminar focuses on research into the experiences of non-traditional students in higher education and support systems to aid their success. Hosted by Tony Hudson of The University of East London, the keynote speaker is Professor Mary Stuart, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Kingston University, who recently led a team of researchers looking at life history data from people who are the first in their families to take part in higher education. Other speakers and workshop leaders include Professor Paula Hixenbaugh, Westminster University, co-author of Personal Tutoring in Higher Education, and Margo Blythman, University of the Arts, London, who will run a workshop on strategic approaches to the development and management of personal tutorial systems. 

 

The Practice of Academic Writing

 

Wednesday 28th November, Staffordshire University

 

This event will focus on an overview of writing for publication in academic journals, books and also for funding bids. Hosted by Pete Jones of Staffordshire University, the keynote speaker is Professor Miriam Zukas, University of Leeds, editor of the journal Studies in the Education of Adults. Other speakers and workshop leaders include Dr Gillian Klein of Trentham Books, Professor David Jary, editor of the journal Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning, and Steve Buchanan from The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) who will speak about the skills of writing good funding bids.
