The reality is that a number of large organizations hold our personal details and that in practise there many ways in which this information can be 'shared' - by personal contact, by bribed contact, by police request and by governmental request (especially US Government request) 'for security purposes'. Simon's knowledge poses an important question. Why are those who think of themselves as social reformers, or as belonging to the left, seem so much out of touch such realities? Capitalism, supported by information technology has delivered the goods - and the information. We are confronted by detailed evidence of the inequalities that exist without any obvious way of combating them. LM is one of a small number of companies that has the machinery to open as many letters and scan as many forms as is required in the time available. If you really want to worry though, bear in mind that (I seem to recall) they did the processing for the last census and they will already be doing all sorts of other official and non-official mailings!
