This announcement is available on-line: www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/

The Department of Science and Technology Studies, UCL, seeks to appoint Teaching Fellows to cover four courses during the 2007-08 session.

Applicants may apply to teach one or more courses. The following courses require tutors:

1.     HPSC1003 Introduction to the Philosophy of Science (Autumn Term)

2.     HPSC1008 Introduction to Science Communication – 50% (Autumn Term)

3.     HPSC3013 The 'New Genetics' and Society (Winter Term)

4.     HPSC2009 Observation and Discovery in Medicine – 50% - with related teaching in the department’s Student Selected Component (SSC) for our intercalated BSc (Winter Term)

Specific details are below. Applicants are expected to follow existing syllabi, or to provide a strong rationale for variation. Assessment methods must remain unchanged. Teaching times are set and normally cannot be changed. Specific information on each course, syllabi, and timetables, is on-line: <www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/bsc>. Alternative courses may be substituted in exceptional circumstances.

Candidates should have a PhD, or be close to submission, in a related field. They also should have at least two years experience in undergraduate teaching, including development of lecture and tutorial materials, and should show the range of interests and skills necessary to supervise students. Preference will be given to applicants who can deliver several of these courses. Each course amounts to approximately forty percent of a part-time (3 month) staff post and most likely will be paid pro-rated on UCL’s pay structure as grade 7, spine point 33 (£30,012) plus London allowance. In sum, salary per whole course is expected to be approximately GBP3,200 inclusive. These appointments are fixed term contracts; no renewal is planned. Applicants must be able to work legally in the UK.

Candidates should send a CV, names of two referees who can be contacted regarding the candidate’s teaching experience, and a brief proposal on how the existing course syllabus can be implemented or refined. These must be received by 07 September 2007. Send materials to Undergraduate Tutor, Department of Science and Technology Studies, University College London, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, UK. Direct enquiries to Dr Joe Cain <[log in to unmask]>.
