NEGOTIATING LICENCES
10 October 2007, London

This one-day course is intended for information professionals who are required to negotiate contracts and licences for information products, and who wish to do so in a way which best suits the needs of their organisation.

The day will help participants to become familiar with the layout used in typical licence agreements for information products, so that they are not put off by the technical language or "legalese" that they contain. It is intended for anyone who has to deal with online resource renewals, new subscriptions or cancellations and who needs to become more confident in negotiating those agreements.

The course includes practical sessions to familiarise participants with examples of suppliers' terms and conditions; and also to think about the key issues to address when negotiating licence terms. It will provide practical tips and strategies which participants can use in their work.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
By the end of the day participants will have a good understanding of the typical clauses contained in contracts for electronic products; and will feel more confident at negotiating on both the price and other contract terms.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Information professionals who have responsibility for negotiating contracts and licence agreements as one part of their job, and who need to gain a better understanding of licence agreements and the challenges involved in contract negotiation.

COURSE LEADER: PAUL PEDLEY
Paul is Head of Research at the Economist Intelligence Unit. He is a Visiting Professor at London Metropolitan University, a member of the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance and on the Advisory Board of the JISC Legal Information Service. Paul has written a number of books, including "Essential law for information professionals", "Managing Digital Rights" (editor), and "Digital copyright" which are all published by Facet Publishing.
