If you’ve been keeping a close eye on the UK
Access
Management Federation for Education and Research website, you may have
noticed
that we now have 96 members. This means that if your organisation joins
in the
next few days then you could be the federation’s 100th
member!
Although you may not be ready to implement
Shibboleth at the
moment, there is nothing to stop you from joining the federation now to
enable
you to benefit from membership as soon as you are ready.
In her JISC Access Management Team Blog (http://involve.jisc.ac.uk/wpmu/jam/2007/08/13/mcshibbolising/),
Nicole Harris summarises this nicely, using a quote from a recent RSC
event in
Edinburgh:
“One of the key messages from the day was the
importance of kicking off the legal part of joining the Federation. To
quote
Andy Swiffin:
‘There is no cost involved in doing this and even
if
you subsequently decide to outsource your identity provision your
institution
will still need to join. The great benefit in doing this as soon as
possible is
that when you do want to actively participate all of the paperwork is
in place.
In addition, if as many institutions as possible join now it sends a
very clear
message to Service Providers that this is something that the UK
academic
community is serious about and that its worth their while to put some
effort in
making their application Shibboleth aware. This in turn benefits us
all!’”

John
