The National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) and the 
National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG) are both research centres based 
in the NUI Maynooth with a shared interest in the management, analyses 
and mapping of spatial data. NIRSA, established as a University 
Institute in Jan. 2001, seeks to undertake fundamental, applied and 
comparative research on spatial processes and their effects on social 
and economic development in Ireland. The NCG, launched in Oct. 2004 
through the award of a research fellowship to its Director by Science 
Foundation Ireland, has established itself as a resource for those 
interested in any aspect of the capture, storage, integration, 
management, retrieval, display, analysis or modelling of spatial data.

The above post would involve working with Associates of both NIRSA and 
NCG under the direction of their Directors.


*Job Purpose: *

    *

      To help Associates of NIRSA and NCG undertake GIS-based research
      projects, manage projects, supervise small teams of researchers,
      undertake spatial data management, and assist in writing grant
      proposals.


*Main activities of the role:*

    *

      Undertaking fundamental and applied spatial research using GIS

    *

      Managing and supervising small teams of researchers

    *

      Liasing with project funders and stakeholders

    *

      Managing spatial data and their licenses

    *

      Managing various software packages and their licensing

    *

      Writing grant proposals and seeking new funding opportunities

    *

      Be able to promote research findings and present work to third parties

    *

      Help in the organization and promotion of various events
      (conferences, seminars, workshops) organised by NIRSA and NCG, and
      arrangements for visitors.


*Person specification for the role (desirables):*

    * Third level qualified and preferably two years or more work
      experience in GIS

    *

      Proven project management skills, leadership skills and ability to
      direct and supervise others

    *

      Good understanding of spatial data handling, data storage and
      associated metadata

    *

      Knowledge of GIS packages and good general IT skills

    *

      Some knowledge of spatial modeling and statistics

    *

      Some ability to write original code and macros

    *

      Professional attitude and image

    *

      Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

    *

      Ability to work on their own, demonstrate initiative and to meet
      deadlines

      Salary on the scale: €* *37,886 - €50,701 p.a.

It is hoped that this post will be extended beyond a year subject to 
funding.
