City University, 4th October 2007, Atrium of the Social Sciences Building

You are cordially invited to attend the launch of:

‘PRISONERS AT WORK’
A collaboration between professional photographer Andy Aitchison, Barbed graphic design studio, the Howard League for Penal Reform, City University and Crime, Media, Culture: An International Journal.

This exhibition represents an innovative way of communicating the experiences of British prisoners through visualising and contextualising ‘Prisoners at Work’. The project was originally commissioned by Barbed, a graphic design studio run by the Howard League for Penal Reform inside HMP Coldingly. Barbed employs inmates who are trained and paid minimum wage to compete for and carry out design work for external clients. One of the main factors stopping ex-prisoners re-offending is gaining employment post-release. This collaboration sharpens focus on a crucial problem, and demonstrates how creative thinking can produce meaningful solutions.
