LABYRINTHITIS -- the Sounds of the Hearing Cells Medical Museion, University of Copenhagen (www.museion.ku.dk) has invited sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard to create a new work, to illustrate some of the themes of the public conference 'Art and Biomedicine: Beyond the Body', Monday September 3, 2007. In co-operation with researchers at the Centre for Applied Hearing Research at the Danish Technical University, Jacob Kirkegaard has turned his listening ear inwards - to his own ear. By using specially developed listening equipment, he has captured the activity of the microscopic sensory hair cells of the cochlea. When sound enters the ear, they begin to vibrate in the watery liquid surrounding them like underwater piano strings. Thus, the hearing organ does not only receive sound, it also generates it, just like an acoustic instrument (otoacoustic emissions). Labyrinthitis will be performed in the Auditorium of Medical Museion, Bredgade 62, Copenhagen, Sunday September 2, 2007 at 6pm, 8pm and 10pm. Entrance is free, but seat reservations are necessary. Please write to [log in to unmask], indicating which of the three performances you prefer to attend. The reservation mail service is now open.
