Hi,

  In a typical case of Zieve syndrome, chylomicronaemia (severe hypertriglyceridaemia) is an essential component of the syndrome that leads to changes in red cell membrane lipid composition causing haemolysis. Serum of such patients is described as having strawberry milk shake appearance due to combination of lipaemia and hamolysis.

            Dear list members,

  Is anyone familiar with Zieve's syndrome? (A haemolytic condition associated with alcohol misuse. The features are jaundice and hyperlipidaemia/hyperlipoproteinaemia.) I've had a query from a haematologist asking whether the following lipid results could be consistent with the syndrome:

  Cholesterol = 6.5 mmol/L
  Triglyceride = 1.1 mmol/L

  Thank you in anticipation,

  Liz
