ROYAL COLLEGE OF PATHOLOGISTS

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job title:    Education Centre Project Manager
Responsible to:    College Council through Professor Paola Domizio (RCPath Registrar and Project Lead)

Working hours:    Full time (35 hours per week)

Salary:    £29,000-£34,000 (equivalent to Museums Association Senior Level 1)

Location:    The Royal College of Pathologists, 2 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AF

Introduction
The Royal College of Pathologists is a professional membership organisation dedicated to the advancement of the science and practice of pathology. Currently there are about 8,200 members, all of whom are pathologists based in hospitals, universities and laboratories in the UK and overseas. The College's main tasks are to set and maintain training standards for doctors and scientists, to advise on the appointment of consultants, to ensure the membership is kept up to date with current practice through the continuing professional development scheme, and to promote the latest developments in pathology by holding scientific meetings.

The College's mission is to promote excellence in the practice of pathology and to be responsible for maintaining standards through training, assessments, examinations and professional development, to the benefit of the public.

Background
The College is located at 2 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1. The lower ground floor of the College is currently being refurbished as an Education Centre. The refurbishment programme will cost £3.8 million and is scheduled to take approximately one year. The planned re-opening in November 2008 will coincide with the first National Pathology Week. To complement the refurbished Education Centre, the College wishes to develop an exhibition and outreach programme based on the science and practice of pathology. The main target audience is school students aged 16-18 but it is hoped that the exhibition will appeal to a wider audience including medical students and interested adults. Given the short time scale it is not anticipated that the outreach project will be ready in time for the opening of the Education centre, but it is hoped that a fully developed programme will be launched within 3 years. A project manager is sought to manage this exciting venture, for one year in the first instance.
