The conference is open to postgraduates studying in the UK or abroad. It offers the opportunity for students to present research in musicology, composition and performance in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Keynote speakers will include Professor Peter Franklin (St. Catherine's College, Oxford) and Professor Jim Samson (Royal Holloway, University of London). Proposals are invited for papers (20 minutes), lecture-recitals (30 minutes), or poster presentations on any area of musical research. Proposals on topics in practice-based research are especially welcome. Proposals should not exceed 200 words in length. There are no restrictions concerning age, nationality, or area of practice including, for example, installation, electroacoustic, and improvised hybrids (electronic and/or acoustic). The duration of submissions should be stated with full details of all technological requirements. Gemini (ensemble-in-residence at the University of Surrey) will workshop and perform six new pieces for violin, clarinet (doubling bass clarinet) and piano. The workshop and performance will be recorded by students from Surrey's Tonmeister course. Recordings will be edited and made available to participants. The duration of the piece should be stated on the score and should not exceed 8 minutes. If amplification or other technology is required, the requirements must be set out precisely and completely on the score. Composers should indicate clearly if they are submitting for the Gemini workshop. Those whose pieces are selected for performance are required to register and attend the conference for its full duration. Submissions should include a score, a programme note and a 150-word biography. We shall endeavour to communicate a decision on all submissions by 21st November. Royal Musical Association bursaries are available for delegates whose paper proposals or compositions are selected for the conference: application should be made with your submission, stating the reasons why a bursary is needed, and any other sources of support sought.
