It took me 9 months to organize access via Webeditions using Athens authentication – the initial response from someone at Elsevier was that they didn’t do institutional access!  Then about a week after it was sorted I got an email saying it would cease next March, have so far been putting my head in the sand over what to do when it does cease.

As I said to the consultant who wanted electronic access, ‘to some people e-journals are the answer, to librarians they can be just the start of the problem’!

But at least it is Friday …

Paula

I have just contacted Elsevier by email (for the 2nd time) over the withdrawal of Web Editions (which, for me, doesn't actually take place until next March). I pointed out to Elsevier that they were removing a very useful service but they said that few people used it as most libraries prefer to pay for enhanced electronic access and longer back files.

We too are a small Trust, possibly the smallest in the UK. We are also very specialist which means that most of the ejournals provided by the Core Content are of no interest to our staff at all.

Unlike you, I have had no problems with Athens authentication. I simply asked my subscription agent to see what they could do & they did. We currently do not pay Elsevier for electronic access to any of their journals.

I have recently received an email reply to my complaint and, having sent information regarding the size of the Trust, the journals we want electronically etc, am now awaiting a response. Following my previous email enquiry, I received a telephone call from a sales rep who, unfortunately, was unable to find me a no-cost solution for Eaccess to journals. I'm still hopeful that some solution will be found.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems & feel that a request for a refund is reasonable. However, I still don't see why the 2 systems can't continue to run side-by-side.

Good luck in your endeavours.

Usual apologies for cross-posting.

As a small NHS library in the UK the withdrawal of Web Editions has caused hideous problems for us - it's now July and we have been without access to our electronic journals via Elsevier for half the year now. You can imagine the level of exasperation.

We have communicated the fact both to our subscription agent and to Elsevier, several times. The difficulties have been compounded by the fact that the people who deal with Athens access at Elsevier now appear to be located in Singapore and are extremely ignorant of how IP address access works in the UK, particularly in the NHS. They also seem completely bemused by the fact that a hospital in the UK is not an American-style-on-one-site-multi-skyscraper but is often a random assortment of buildings spread out over more than one site! And as for Athens access, well, I might as well be speaking ancient Ainu as the Athens access simpley doesn't work.

Elsevier are not the only offender in this respect but they are the largest, and it would be nice to think they could be a role model. The current excuse is that publishers are "busy with current subscriptions" but it is now almost the end of June, meaning we have been without online access to some of these journals for almost half our subscription now despite repeated emails and attempts to speak to a human being. Perhaps some day publishers will offer pro rata refunds for this level of inconvenience!! (Or do we need to have a 7 figure budget to get them to talk to us?!)

And to think, once, many years ago, I used to think working in publishing would be a viable career choice... Are we the ONLY NHS library in this position?
