That functionality seems to have been lost indeed, as far as I can see?
Please open a bug in Savannah. In the meantime you can put a file like
/etc/profile.d/AA_X509_CERT_DIR.sh on your WNs, containing this:
export X509_CERT_DIR=/path/to/your/certdir
