Environment Agency lambasted over flood investment
policy and data usage |
|
|
The National Audit
Office (NAO - parliamentary watchdog on public spending) has
recently released a comprehensive review of Environment Agency
(EA) spending and practices. With nearly 500 000 households in
immediate flood risk areas (this figure covers river, coastal,
estuarine and floodplain), the EA has the mammoth task of
managing and maintaining 24 000 miles of flood defences and 46
000 flood defence structures. |

British Geological
Survey (BGS) has recently added to its increasing portfolio of
surveyor relevant publicly available information by taking
high specification aerial imagery of flood hit areas in
northern England. |

September 2007, Leipzig, Germany InterGeo, the
biggest surveying and mapping conference in the world, will
this year be held in Leipzig, Germany from 25 - 27 September.
The event is a conference and trade fair for geodesy,
geoinformation and land management. |

organisations and Climate Change |

The
Intergovernmental Policy on Climate Change (IPCC) and the
Stern Report (published in October 2006) both state that
climate change is occurring, and the best case scenario is a
global warming of 1-2ºC. This feature looks at individual
organisations and see what they are doing to tackle their
carbon footprint to reverse the global warming
trend. |

New regulations for waste shipments |
|
|
The
regulations governing importing and exporting waste to and
from the UK were changed on 12 July 2007, which may mean that
organisations involved in these activities are at risk of
prosecution if they fail to follow the proper
procedure. |

environmental impacts of development projects, and identifying
measures that can be taken to reduce these
impacts. |

production |

European Parliament
calls for stabilisation of waste production, including
recycling targets on construction waste. Member States want
more flexibility. As the average waste production of an EU
resident is around 500 kg (3.5 tonnes per person if industrial
waste is included), the EU is set reduce the amount of waste
we produce. |

RICS has made a
significant step towards embracing the practical implications
of sustainability by introducing a best practice guide for the
property professional. |

RICS joins Society for the Environment |
|
|
RICS has joined the
Society for the Environment (SocEnv) as a constituent and
licensed body. This comes after a year of negotiations,
spearheaded by the RICS Environment Faculty and means that
from October 2006 we are able to award the chartered
environmentalist (CEnv) qualification to Members and Fellows
with suitable credentials. |
