MA / PhD in Refugee Care

The MA in Refugee Care is an innovative degree that is offered jointly by the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies of the University of Essex and the Tavistock Clinic. Its aim is to equip students to work directly with refugees and asylum seekers. It is a one-year, full-time programme. The PhD in Refugee Care requires students to complete successfully the MA in Refugee Care (without the dissertation) and then proceed to two years full-time (or four years part-time) work on their PhD thesis. These programmes prepare students:

- for work as competent, reflective and pro-active workers with refugees/asylum seekers in a variety of different work settings and remits

- to meet the challenges imposed by those wider societal parameters (e.g. changing legislation, political priorities, public opinion) that affect refugees directly and indirectly

- to conceptualise and formulate refugee-related projects (for research and/or service purposes)

To address these aims, the MA programme combines theoretical, practical and experiential modes of learning.

Emphasis

The emphasis of this MA is on introducing a therapeutic dimension and a psychosocial perspective to the work with asylum seekers/refugees. The explicit intention is to make workers more effective therapeutically, in whatever role they have in working in this field (e.g. in management, education, law, social work, psychology, psychotherapy, community work). Therefore, the usefulness of this course is not limited to those who intend to work psychotherapeutically (in the strict sense of the word) with refugees. It is for this reason that the title refers to 'Care' rather than to 'psychotherapy'.

Entrance requirements

For the MA - a University degree (or equivalent) in any subject, and a record of relevant work/experience or serious intent to work in relevant settings with refugees/asylum seekers.

For the PhD - a Masters degree (or equivalent) plus the same record of experience.

Nature of these degrees

These degrees do not constitute a professional training. However, if students already possess a professional registration these degrees may assist them to obtain a speciality within that registration.

Content, time commitment and the location of courses

The MA includes four courses (modules) and a dissertation, and it is taught on two sites. Two courses are offered at the University of Essex (50 minutes by train from London Liverpool Street station) and two other courses at the Tavistock Clinic (in London, NW3). In addition, students are expected to undertake (a) a systematic observation of an organisation and (b) a placement in a relevant institution/service.
