It is really important that social services staff assess the
accommodation and student to ensure that the correct equipment is
recommended and provided. In the past, our local social service
occupational therapists have liaised with the student's home social
services department to ascertain what is needed, and where the charge
will fall. This should not normally be with the university as the
university is not a residential care provider (although in some case of
course, it may be). The university has to be involved, usually the DO
and accommodation officer, as it is important to be aware whether the
accommodation is of a standard to cope with for instance a ceiling track
for a hoist, or that there is space in the bathroom for a lavamat.

Pauline,

My understanding is that this should be funded by Social Services.

Subject: Provision of beds, toilets frames etc

Dear All,

I've not had to deal with this one before so hoping someone can help me.
We have a student coming here in September who is going to require a
specialist bed and toilet frames. Is this something that the University
has to pay for or can we ask for Social Services to pay for it?

Many thanks

Pauline
