Raleigh, NC Vacancy Number: 4804-0200-0004-163 Salary Range: $45,531 - $75,708 Type: Permanent, Full-time Apply By: 07/26/2007 by 5:00 p.m. DESCRIPTION The State Library of North Carolina, a nationally recognized leader in addressing the challenges of preserving digital information, is seeking an innovative and forward-thinking librarian to provide leadership and national perspective on long-term management and preservation of digital assets. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness in developing and implementing digital information management systems and preservation practices for state government and the State Library. The Director will provide strategic direction for the Program by leading a team of dynamic librarians in: establishing a technical and organizational program structure to support digital information management activities; developing effective and achievable strategies for maintaining long-term viability of and access to digital state government information; facilitating digital preservation policy development; and building publicly accessible repositories and archives of state government websites and digital publications. QUALIFICATIONS MLS and at least 3 years of professional and 2 years of supervisory experience. The successful candidate will possess considerable knowledge of professional library and information science principles and practices; digital library project/program management; current and developing practices in digital information management and preservation; trends and issues in digital government information; and public administration and policy development. Must demonstrate leadership skills in formulating organizational goals and priorities; planning, implementing, and evaluating library services and programs; initiating and cultivating effective working relationships within the Library and state government; actively participating and representing the Program in the digital preservation community of practice, locally and nationally; and communicating program concepts and practices internally and externally to achieve success. Experience with program development; project planning and management; digital information or digital library management; metadata applications; and supervision of librarians essential. ABOUT THE DIGITAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (DIMP) The Digital Information Management Program (DIMP) extends the traditional library functions of collecting, managing, and preserving printed state documents for public access to include digitized and born digital state information and the development of digital library collections. Located in the Library Services Section, DIMP staff, which includes a Program Director, Digital Program Liaison and Technologies Manager, Digital Collections Manager, Digitization Program Manager, and a Digital State Documents Librarian, works internally within the State Library and State Archives and externally with state agencies, national organizations, and libraries/archives throughout the country to develop policies, standards, and practices that facilitate management and preservation of born digital government information and support the development of sustainable digital archives for long-term public access.
