PUBLIC SERVICES QUALITY GROUP The twelfth annual quality forum for archives and local studies at The National Archives, Kew Wednesday 7th November 2007 Balancing the Impossible - security and access in archives: This year, the Public Service Quality Group (PSQG) Annual Quality Forum will address issues relating to security and access in archives: How do we identify and protect vulnerable items while allowing access and descriptions to be available on-line? How do we address issues regarding staff access to collections and document security? What will the future hold for reader registration? What is the best way to share information regarding thefts? What security aspects need to be built into disaster planning and what are the best uses of technology to improve security? The morning session will be introduced by Charlotte Hodgson Convenor of PSQG, the keynote speech regarding the general issues and principles surrounding security and access will be given by Gerry Slater from PRONI, followed by the Judith Barnes Reading Room Co-ordinator from the British Library talking on legal implications and lessons learnt, James Strachan, Director of Public Services and Marketing at TNA will speak on security and public places, William Brown the National Security Advisor at MLA will discuss strategic issues. In the afternoon Tim Harris the Technical Services Manager at LMA will out line what is next and how we can respond to security matters, Paul Brough the County Archivist at Cornwall Record Office will discuss CARN and its future, Geoff Pick the Public Services Manager at LMA will speak on the launch of the PSQG Security and Access Group. Then there will be presentations from security professionals from the private sector who will discuss the latest technology which can be used in the heritage sector. The companies concerned will also be available to discuss their products individually with forum delegates at their trade-stalls. There will be, as usual, PSQG work in progress reports and a short business session at the end of the day.
