I get the same feeling about a fair bit of
current 'established' Australian poetry.
It tries too hard, and ends up failing.

This seems a good moment to mention a new anthology (which I'm in!),
The Weighing of the Heart. An anthology of "emerging" (whatever
that means) Western Australian poets. In contrast to the
'establishment', the poems are... fresh, that's the word I'd use.
And with feet on the ground, as Kasper says, but hearts in the sky.

Introduction by John Kinsella.
Can be had for AUD$25 from Sunline Press, via the contact form
on their website:

My one criticism of the anthology (apart from a teeny misprint in
my poem!) is that there are too many women in it and not enough men.
But that probably isn't the editors' fault -- it reflects the general
state of poetry around here.
