Penalties for students whose work is plagiarised
Hi David,
 
we treat the lender and the copier the same, both students would be treated under the Northumbria Regs which explicitly point this out. The question of culpability is avoided pretty much as far as possible. This way at least we anticipate consistent practice.

Dear All,

We have been debating here at the University of Surrey the appropriate punishment,
if any, for the student who lends their work to a course colleague who then copies it.
Assuming that the lender had no notion that the work would be copied and was lending
on the basis of goodwill, should the lender be punished?

We have recent cases within our organisation whereby the lender has
received the same penalty as the plagiariser and cases where the lender has
received no punishment.  So, we are inconsistent and need to provide some general
guidelines.

Does anyone have specific guidelines as to punishment in such cases?
