medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

From: "Juris G. Lidaka" <[log in to unmask]>

> Very curious. I did a search at www.usps.com and came up with
"Publication 51 - International Postal Rates and Fees" dated May 14,
2007 and linking to a Table 6 for tariff rates and to a short comment
on customs forms.

> Now, just because this is after the rate change and shown on the web,
the post office may say "Oops, that was supposed to be deleted and
someone forgot." But you might ask a friendly postmaster to find the
PO's official copy of Publication 51 & see what happens. Either way,
there is a pretty clear sense of their not wanting to deal with those
any more (perhaps because the more expensive methods net them more
money?).

certainly looks like M-Bags still exist, at least _en principe_ (as the Frogs
would say).

though the price has gone up considerably since i used them quite a lot to
ship my loot back from France in time for each year's K'zoo in the '80s:

France is in Zone 3, and my memory is that i was paying about a dollar a
pound, back in those Happy Daze.

sending books as an "expidition par sac" was something of a challenge, since
only one guy (a Boss) in the Chartres P.O. even knew that such a possibility
existed --all the folks at the windows assured me constantly and consistently,
spring after spring, regular as Swallows, that such expititions "ne existe
pas" (even after i learned the proper technical term for them).

sounds like we may have the same sort of Division de Conaissance happening
over here, now.
