The Science Museum resources and booking team reach over 315,000 school visits and 1500 teachers annually through booked courses, visits, INSET sessions and teacher programmes. This post is responsible for the booking office, dealing with enquiries and bookings, gathering data, maintaining and developing the website, as well as developing and delivering teacher's courses, INSET sessions, ITT training sessions and resources

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic, versatile and confident manager with excellent planning and organisation skills to manage this varied team. They will have experience of managing staff on diverse projects and working under pressure. The role will involve setting and managing targets, enabling professional development and ensuring excellent quality and customer service are maintained. 

 

The post holder will manage an annual budget of £40K, and play a significant role in developing the resources and bookings teams to deliver a high impact and diverse range of services to ensure we have a high profile and excellent reputation internally and externally. Forming strategic relationships with education audiences and increasing and diversifying our offer to education and family groups will be a key part of this role. 

 

The ideal candidate will be flexible, able to think on their feet, be an excellent communicator, enjoy a challenge and have a good sense of humour. They will have experience of managing teams, large budgets and of working with groups. With teaching experience, preferably at secondary level and a good understanding of the National Curriculum and educational developments in the field, they will have knowledge and experience of informal learning and have experience of developing and delivering courses, resources and events.

 

The post holder will have excellent written and oral presentation and IT skills. They will be a good networker and able to market the Museum and its education offer to relevant audiences.They will be keen to learn, gain new experiences and be reliable and trustworthy. An excellent self starter with ability  to manage several projects simultaneously to an excellent standard is essential along with flexibility, self-motivation, enthusiasm and possession of excellent problem solving abilities

2.   JOB PURPOSE

To ensure the planning, development, delivery and marketing of learning services, courses and curriculum-related products to facilitate the use of the Museum by educational groups and provide CPD* for teachers. To provide advice and guidance on learning to the Museum

Financial:   

Operational budget of £40K per annum                 

Project budgets of up to £50K per annum 

Raising income of at least £1k per annum

 

Staff:           

Learning Booking Office (1 group visits coordinator (green)  + 5 staff ( orange)

Learning Resources team (2 staff, green).

 

Targets:      

meet annual business plan targets of (currently) 

·         320,000 educational visitors to the Science Museum p.a. rising to 350,000 by 2011 

·         at least 15 teacher training days within the DfES-funded Science Learning Centre London 

·         30 initial teacher training/school INSET sessions 

·         At least 6 new education resources 

·         Ensure trade up figures are achieved and an efficient service is provided.

·         Income generating opportunities are identified

·         New cultural products are supported by the education team

 

	

 

4.   KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Proven experience of staff management

Proven experience in managing budgets in excess of £30K

Proven experience of project management

Experience of teaching science in the formal sector or comparable experience gained elsewhere.

Experience in developing innovative resources and/or courses and/or events for educational audiences.

In-depth knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum, post-16 qualifications and recent developments in formal education and how they are implemented in schools.

Strong understanding of learning in informal environments and the role of museums/informal learning environments in formal education.

Strong understanding of science and science communication..

Excellent problem-solving abilities.

Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Good writing and editing skills, including web authoring and editing.

Understanding of excellent customer service.

Good networking skills and links with other informal learning organisations.

5.   KEY RESULT AREAS

·         Manage, recruit, motivate and develop staff and volunteers to deliver a high quality service and ensure the Science Museum reputation is high

·         To ensure the planning, development and delivery of innovative teacher training to meet objectives for the Science Learning Centre London and the Science Museum business plan, and to establish the Museum as a leading provider of teacher CPD.

·         To ensure the planning, development, marketing and delivery of excellent, innovative educational resources and products for learning audiences and maintain the education area of the Science museum website.

·         To ensure provision of excellent customer service by the Education Booking Office team and to drive trade-up to generate income and meet visitor targets. 

·         To ensure the planning, development and delivery of education marketing initiatives to meet or exceed targets for educational visitor numbers and income generation.

·         To provide expert advice to all project teams, senior managers, sponsorship and development teams to ensure new cultural products are relevant, appealing and useful for education audiences and build links across the museum and beyond.

·         To work alongside new exhibition, outreach and learning teams to ensure resources are developed to best support their remit, and to act as education advocate where appropriate.

·         To plan, monitor and control budgets to ensure expenditure is in line with the business plan and spent to best effect. To generate income and identify opportunities to diversify our offer.

·         Promote the work of the learning team internally and externally to raise the profile and reputation of the Science Museum and the team.

·         Develop and deliver business plans for resources, teacher provision and learning programmes, ensuring initiatives are sustainable over the long term.

·         Ensure evaluation is conducted to measure success and plan for the future

·         To keep updated of changes and developments in the education field and communicate them internally

 

 

	



 

6    ComMUnications and working relationships

·         Colleagues and project teams Museum-wide to ensure that the needs of educational audiences are reflected in the development of new cultural products, and to plan the annual programme of learning events.

·         FOH and IMAX teams to plan, refine and implement customer service provision for educational groups.

·         Marketing team to review and deliver the educational marketing strategy.

·         Web team to oversee development and administer new content for the Learn and Teach web pages.

·         Science Museum Design Studio and Redesign (external designers and printers) to design and produce new resources.

·         Visitor Research team to evaluate new products.

·         Learning and Audience Development Unit Managers (as a member of the LADU management team) to plan and oversee the strategic direction of the Unit.

·         Sponsorship team to identify new opportunities for fundraising.

·         Science Learning Centre London (through membership of the Management Board) to oversee the development and delivery of the vision, strategy and business plan for the Centre in line with DfES targets for teacher CPD.

·         Teachers nationwide to deliver teacher training, promote visits and raise the profile of the Museum.

·         Teachers and educators to ensure evaluation is collected

·         Initial Teacher Training providers to promote use of the Museum by trainee teachers.

·         External organisations involved in science learning (e.g. DfES, the British Association, Royal Society of Chemistry, Royal Institution etc.) to develop new initiatives/collaborative activities and to raise the profile of the Museum's learning provision.

·         Talk Science team to ensure consistency of offer and sharing of resources

·         Outreach /Interactive gallery teams to develop resources and share best practice

·         Science Learning Centre London to develop and deliver courses and evaluation.

7.   SCOPE FOR IMPACT

The postholder's work will:

 

·                   Increase the use of the Science Museum and its cultural products by learning audiences to meet DCMS performance indicators and Science Museum business plan targets.

·                   The post holder will develop strategic ways forward to ensure learning is integrated into  new cultural products

·                   Promote more effective use of the Museum and its cultural products by educational audiences.

·                   Increase income generation through charged activities.

·                   Increase access to the Museum's collections for educational audiences.

·                   Increase the reputation and profile of the Museum with key stakeholders such as DCMS and DFES, as well as internally among staff across NMSI.

·                   Raise the profile of the Museum with teachers and students.

·                   Develop strategic partnerships with external organisations to deliver new products for learning audiences.

·                   Make a significant contribution in shaping the future of teacher training and school science curricula.

·                   Raise the profile of the Science Museum by Marketing, press, conferences, trade fairs, and educational organisations.

·                   Ensure the Science Museum has an excellent reputation with visitors who book in advance. Our service will be polite, helpful and efficient and increase audience numbers. This post will help facilitate the booking office to broaden their scope.
