You are perfectly entitled to ask the police if revealing this 
information would prejudice their enquiry (indeed, I think you would be 
advised to do so if the ex-employee was mysteriously tipped off that 
doing an SAR on yourselves might reveal something interesting).

Note that this level of prejudicing the enquiry is distinct from the 
prejudicing of the enquiry that it is required to be alleged would 
happen if you didn't provide the information.
