Call for Papers and Proposals for Organized Panels

First Conference on Ethnicity, Race, and Indigenous Peoples
in Latin America and the Caribbean

May 22-23, 2008
University of California, San Diego

Conference’s webpage: http://cilas.ucsd.edu/events/conferences.php

Individual papers and organized panel proposals are invited for the First
Conference on Ethnicity, Race, and Indigenous Peoples in Latin America and
the Caribbean, May 22-23, 2008, at the University of California, San
Diego. The event will be organized and sponsored by ERIP (LASA Section on
Ethnicity, Race, and Indigenous Peoples), CILAS-UCSD (Center for Iberian
and Latin American Studies, University of California, San Diego) and LACES
(Latin American and Caribbean Ethnic Studies, journal published by Taylor
& Francis).

Panel and individual paper topics relating to all aspects of ethnicity,
race relations, Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants and other ethnic or
racial groups in Latin America and the Caribbean are welcome. Scholars and
practitioners in all humanities and social science disciplines with an
interest in these areas of research are encouraged to participate.

The program will feature about a dozen panels, organized into four
sessions. On the first day there will be a welcome lunch and a reception
and keynote speaker in the evening. The second day’s program includes
lunch and a closing panel with participation of distinguished scholars in
the afternoon.

Submissions of pre-organized panels will be given preference in the
selection process. Individual papers are also welcome and will be assigned
by the ERIP Conference Program Committee to an appropriate panel with a
chair and a discussant. Those wishing to organize panels are encouraged to
contact the ERIP Conference Program <[log in to unmask]> for assistance
in developing ideas for panels, recruiting participants, etc.

The conference will include panels, proposed and organized by CILAS-UCSD,
on indigenous peoples and natural resources (land, water, trees and
forests, herbs, oil, natural gas, and other resources). We encourage other
institutions such as regional or country-focused scholarly associations
and university departments, to propose "sponsored panels" organized by the
institution, involving their members and receiving their imprimatur.

Submission of Proposals: The deadline for submitting proposals for
individual papers and pre-organized panels is Wednesday, October 31, 2007.
The relevant forms and detailed information about the mechanics of the
submission of proposals can be obtained at the conference’s webpage.

Registration: The conference’s registration fees will cover lunch on both
days and a reception on the evening of the first day. Pre-registration
entitles participants to a discounted fee. To download the
pre-registration form and obtain full information about the
pre-registration and registration fees, amounts, forms of payment and
deadlines, please visit the conference’s webpage.

Registration and Travel Support for Participants from Latin America and
the Caribbean: Paper presenters coming from Latin America and the
Caribbean will be exempted from registration fees (but they are still
required to pre-register). They will also be able to apply for small
grants to help subsidize their travel costs. For full information about
these grants, and to download the application for travel support, please
visit the conference’s webpage.

ERIP-LACES Best Graduate Student Paper Award: A $500 prize will be awarded
