Building a Diverse Workforce Project

Seminar and workshop

July 5th 2007, Idea Store Canary Wharf, Churchill Place, London E14 5RB

10.00am to 1pm, lunch provided

Aimed at Heads of Service, managers with responsibility for training,

potential course delegates

PATH National have worked with Brent Libraries over the past two years on a London wide management development project that aims to address the under representation of BME staff at management levels. There are now 24 staff from 12 London boroughs participating in the training, with plans for another intake in the autumn.

One of the clear messages from the delegates so far is the importance of networks and the sharing of experiences. The proposal for Action Learning Sets has emerged from these discussions.

Action Learning Sets are facilitated discussion groups that focus on specific issues. They usually consist of 6-8 members

·         A powerful way for leaders to learn from other leaders.

·         A simple yet powerful tool for personal and professional development.

·         A structured networking opportunity with a small group of people giving you the environment to ask questions, seek answers, gain support and expect challenge.

·         A process where people become mentors to each other– learning with and through each other.

·         The chance to learn from, and be supported by, a skilled facilitator.

·         The opportunity to work on real problems and implement solutions – management development which is learning by doing.

In an action learning set participants are able to raise difficult questions, discuss sensitive issues, and share their learning in a supportive environment, secure in the knowledge that ‘what’s said in the room stays in the room’.

Brent Libraries and PATH have created a programme of action learning sets for library staff across London libraries. This project is open to all staff, regardless of ethnic background. PATH may be subsidise the cost for BME delegates

On July 5th MLA London are sponsoring a morning seminar to:

Promote the ‘building a diverse workforce’ project

Run Action Learning Set taster sessions

Establish relevant subjects for exploration

The ALS programme will begin in September 2007 and a programme of six sessions will be £600 per delegate (potentially less with PATH subsidy)
