Have you tried the 1:2500 maps from that period (also historical digimap scans)? One of my students has used this data in a slightly different context (Denbighshire/Shropshire) in an attempt to link evidence of mining to current maps through GIS. Despite the extra data needed, he found the 1:2500 were not only much better in terms of 'image quality' but contained more relevant detail. I've taken a look at the area (using 'historic digimap') and there's quite a lot of information on the 1:10560 scale map published 1889-91 (but almost certainly based on somewhat earlier survey). The quality of the histric digimap scans is rather bad, but associated with the mine there appear to be references to 'levels'(1), 'old levels'(2), 'old shaft'(1), 'trial shafts'(3), 'pumping rods'(2) and 'tramway' (1). If it's any use I could probably work out the grid references for all these. Nick > > I would be most greatful for any information list members > can offer on the location of No 4 shaft.
