Lecture

The role of Geographers and Surveyors in International Boundary-Making and Dispute Resolution
Speaker: Martin Pratt
Location: RICS, 12 Great George Street, Parliament Square, London. SW1P 3AD
Date: Thursday 24 May 2007
Time: 1800 - 1900
For all the talk of the emergence of a 'borderless world', many international boundaries continue to be a major source of stress between states. A common source of such stress is a lack of access to appropriate geographical information and expertise in the various stages of boundary-making.

This presentation will highlight some of the key challenges associated with boundary-making in the 21st century and explore the ways in which geographers and surveyors can contribute to effective boundary delimitation, demarcation, maintenance and management.

Martin Pratt studied geography at the University of Durham and International Relations at the University of Chicago before joining the International Boundaries Research Unit in 1994.

He specialises in the analysis of sovereignty and jurisdictional disputes and has advised governments, law firms, oil companies and publishers on more than thirty international boundary disputes. He is currently IBRU's Director of Research and an adviser to the Task Force on International Boundaries of the United Nations Geographic Information Working Group.

The International Boundaries Research Unit works to enhance the resources available for the peaceful resolution of problems associated with international boundaries on land and at sea, including their delimitation, demarcation and management. Since it's foundation in 1989 IBRU has built up an international reputation as a source of information and expertise on boundary and territorial issues around the world.

The lectures are free and open to all, members and non-members. The RICS bar will be open after the lecture.
