Fully funded doctoral studentship on policing the night-time economy

Applications are invited for a doctoral studentship entitled Policing the night-time economy in Scotland. The studentship starts on 1 October 2007 and is available on a full-time basis (3 years). It covers tuition fees and a stipend of £10,000 per annum. Additional funding for fieldwork activities and conference attendance will also be made available.
Co-funded by the University of Dundee and the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR). The studentship will explore the nature and impact of the policing of the night-time economy in Scottish towns and cities and relate this to wider issues concerning public disorder and anti-social-behaviour, partnership working between the police service and other agencies, and the implications of changing urban policy for policing in Scotland.
The studentship will be based in the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Dundee and the project will be supervised by Professor Nick Fyfe (Geography) and Dr Martin Elvins (Politics).
The Scottish Institute for Policing Research is supported by investment from the Scottish Funding Council and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland. It involves a collaboration between 13 Scottish universities and offers a range of opportunities for conducting relevant, applicable research to help the police meet the challenges of the 21st century and for ensuring that research feeds into policing policy and practice.
Applicants must have a good first degree (2:1 or better) in a relevant social science discipline and preferably should have completed (or be about to complete) a recognised research training programme, such as an ESRC-approved Masters degree. However, applicants with relevant professional experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be EU citizens.

Application procedure: Applicants should submit a CV and a covering letter containing the contact details for two referees to: Professor Nick Fyfe, Geography, School of Social Sciences, University of Dundee, Dundee, DD1 4HN. Closing date for applications is 5pm Friday 8 June 2007. Short-listed applicants will be invited for interview on Friday 22 June 2007.
