**Funded PhD Research Studentship**

 

Tackling Worklessness in a Deprived Region: Labour Market Dynamics and Policy Responses

 

Centre for the Study of Cities and Regions, Durham University 

 

Durham University invites applications from suitably qualified students for the above project. The student will join a multi-disciplinary research team in the Wolfson Research Institute based at Durham University's Queen's Campus. The Institute conducts research into health and wellbeing, and has an emerging interest in the work and worklessness (http://www.dur.ac.uk/wolfson.institute/). The student will be jointly supervised by Professor Joe Painter, Director of the Centre for the Study of Cities and Regions (www.dur.ac.uk/cscr/) and Dr Clare Bambra, Lecturer in the Centre for Public Policy and Health (www.dur.ac.uk/public.health/). The studentship is partly funded by the Tees Valley Joint Strategy Unit and interaction with local policymakers will be a key feature of the research. 

 

This studentship is open to students who have or expect to obtain a strong first degree (2:1 or above) in a social science or health policy-related field (for example, human geography, social policy, public health, or sociology) and with an interest in employment policy. They will develop research on worklessness and public policy with a particular focus on the Tees Valley. The project will utilise both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, for which training will be provided in the first year. 

 

This studentship is available for a period of three years from October 2007. 

 

The successful student will be registered for a PhD (MPhil in the first instance) from October 2007 (or as soon as possible thereafter) in the Department of Geography, Durham University (recognised as one of the best in the country in the past three Research Assessment Exercises, (www.dur.ac.uk/geography/). The student will receive a stipend of £10,000 per annum, payment of tuition fees, and an allowance for travel/conference attendance for a period of three years.
