Technology has escaped from the zoo: studying usability
in the wild

(September 11th, 2007) in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

	http://www.cs.indiana.edu/surg/interact2007/
<http://www.cs.indiana.edu/surg/interact2007/>

held in conjunction with the 11th IFIP TC 13 International
Conference on
	Human-Computer Interaction Interact'2007

	http://www.interact2007.org/

Aims and goals of the workshop

A highly energetic and interactive exploration, the workshop
will investigate usability in the wild, where laboratory modeling ends
and reality begins. The workshop will investigate methods to gather
sufficient usability feedback in non-traditional environments-those
environments where change is rapid, unpredictable and difficult to
control.

Driven by emergent themes from participant submissions, the
workshop aims to address the challenges faced by researchers working in
non-traditional environments, reviewing how data can be collected under
limited control and how data can be analyzed using methods applicable to
the evaluation of limited usability data. Additionally, participants
will collaboratively review social responsibility challenges in each
non-traditional environment, such as maintaining the health and safety
of researchers and participants without distracting from primary tasks.

Successful submissions will be grouped into domains. Based on
previous workshops, the following domains will likely, but not
necessarily, emerge:

	-Healthcare

	-Community

	-Military

	-Mobile & Location Based Games

	-Everyday Life

	 Topics of interest include:

	- Usability Evaluation and Evaluation Methods

	- Social Responsibility

	- Ubiquitious and Context Aware Computing

	- Safety Issues and Human Error

	- International and Cultural Aspects of HCI

	- Mobile Computing

	Structure of the workshop

	Using illustrative non-traditional environment photographs,
workshop participants will start to discuss challenges; sharing
potential and adopted usability techniques. Next, thematic panels will
briefly introduce approaches, then allow group discussion to explore in
greater depth particular challenges and topics of interest. Finally, the
workshop will review generalisable themes and strategies, working toward
the development of a non-traditional environment usability
framework-further developed and explored through future collaborations.

	Submission

Submissions should be a position paper up to four pages in
length. Submissions will be evaluated according to the relevance and
originality of the work and to their ability to generate discussions
between the participants of the workshop. The format of submitted papers
must follow the Springer LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) format
(http://www.springer.com/east/home/computer/lncs?SGWID=5-164-7-72376-0),
including no page numbers. Submitted papers must be in PDF or Word for
Windows format. Please include an illustrative photograph(s) of a
non-traditional environment for participant review and discussion.
Papers and photograph(s) should be submitted to

	- June 26th 2007: Submission of full and position papers

	- July 10th 2007: Notification of acceptance

	- August 5th 2007: Camera-ready copies of accepted papers due

	- September 11th, 2007: Workshop

	Publication

Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings
and selected papers will also be invited to submit an extended version
to a special issue journal to be named at a later date.
