Abolition, Parliament and the People is the title of an exhibition at Westminster Hall, Houses of Commons, which opened last Wednesday. Westminster Hall was also the place where Lord Mansfield ruled on 22 June 1772 in favour of James Somerset, a slave whose Virginian based Scottish master had brought to England.

The decision was said to have been the beginning of the end of slavery in the British Empire, and a trigger to the American declaration of independence in 1776.

The Equiano Society is organising an event on 22 June 2007 to celebrate the Mansfield decision. Participants include David Neita (Barrister), Lincoln Crawford, QC, and Arthur Torrington.
