A three day short course Genetic Association Studies and Mendelian-
Randomisation will take place in the Department of social Medicine, 
University of Bristol from 11th-13th July 2007.

Ian Day, Dr Tom Gaunt, Dr Philip Guthrie, Professor Debbie Lawlor, 
Professor Lyle Palmer, Dr Santiago Rodriguez and others. 

Who the course is intended for: This course is designed for 
epidemiologists and other researchers with little or no genetics 
knowledge, or those who simply want to refresh their genetics knowledge. 

Course outline: Topics to be covered include: Structure of DNA and 
chromosomes, gene expression, cell division and DNA replication, genetic 
recombination, mutations and polymorphisms, principles of Mendelian 
inheritance, single locus and polygenic models, familial aggregration, 
twin studies, adoption studies, the concept of heritablility, basic 
principles of linkage analysis, identity by state and by descent. 

Suggested pre-course reading: Burton PR, Tobin MD, Hopper JL. Key concepts 
in genetic epidemiology. Lancet 2005;366:941-51. 

Teaching time: Twelve hours with formal lectures, practical sessions, and 
group discussion work. 

Course fee: £300.
