As part of the Joint Use Libraries International Conference in Manchester in 
June, there will be a pre-conference workshop on Monday 18th June on 
communication skills for joint use library staff.  This is open to delegates

As a librarian in a joint use library, how do you:
•	Communicate effectively with managers from two or more organisations (eg 
headteachers, public library managers/councillors, college principals, NHS 
mangers)?
•	Communicate effectively with staff from different backgrounds and 
different sectors?
•	Support different types of users (eg general public, students, 
clinicians)?
•	Reconcile the conflicting priorities, missions and aims of the 
organisations involved in a joint use library?
•	Promote the necessary changes to traditional practices?

This one day course will introduce you to ways to:
	ways to engage with people
	build rapport
	find out how someone is motivated to learn
	tell whether someone wants you to “sell” them a benefit or solve a 
problem for them
	discover how to enhance library/user relationships

Joint Use Libraries, an International Conference

The main conference will be held from 19th to 21st June 2007 at The Lowry in
Manchester, UK (www.thelowry.com) and will feature a diverse range of joint 
use libraries, from small scale joint school-public libraries to large scale 
mergers involving central libraries, college and university library and 
examples of other partnership arrangements with health, voluntary, social 
services etc.  There will be conference dinner on the Wednesday with an 
after dinner poetry reading by Wendy Cope.
