Dear All

I was reading in the latest 'Information World Review' that JISC will cease
paying for Athens authentication for university-based resources in July 08,
and begin managing access via Shibboleth.

I was wondering what the implications are likely to be for us medical
librarians, as we are currently heavy users of Athens authentication. By
implication, it seems as though the new JISC model might also become a
system in which we in the healthcare sector should be interested/move
towards in the future (?) I am unclear what the advantages of Shibboleth
are, as I have never been involved in using that system.

Is there anyone out there who understands this well enough to tell me what
the implications are, and if we should be thinking about planning our access
differently in the future? I am currently struggling with publishers of
e-journals who are not yet using Athens authentication!

Best wishes
Diane
