***SORRY FOR CROSS-POSTINGS*** REMINDER *31st LCA Discussion Forum* *Life cycle assessment and ecodesign* *10th of May 2007, 9:00 - 17:00h, ETH Zentrum, HG F 33.1* We are pleased to invite you to the 31tst Discussion Forum on Life Cycle Assessment. The term ecodesign is applied for principles and strategies in industrial product develoment, based more or less on scientific knowledge on environmental impact assessment. Life Cycle Assessment (LCS), Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Material Intensity per Service (MIPS), ecological key figures or common environmental strategies serve as criteria, whereof strategies and guidelines for product development are deduced. Strategies may be purely ecology oriented or include all aspects of sustainable development (environment, society and economy). Environmental aspects include a conservation of resrouces and materials, construction in modules (for replacement), optimised life time duraiton, low impacts in the use phase, easy fragmentation and recycling also. Societal aspects are present in the market positioning of products, even if not always obviously. Design guidelines for form, colour and aesthtics and especially innovations for functionality and user friendliness represent actual societal trends. Economy finally decides which environmental and societal aspects are feasible for production. Since ecodesign is strongly related with the products and their value added chain, the term is very open and there is little, common systematic proceeding visible. The question is: if ecodesign can be equalized with (EPD) and thereby is related to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). An interesting question is how fare the EU initiative on energy using products (EuP9, which fosters ecodesing, can structure the proceeding. Similar implementation may also be deduced from the integrated product policy (IPP) that also aims considering holistic environmental aspects. The presentations shall show controversial attemps and reveal their systematic approach, practicability and scientific base. In the three workshops (one in German, one in English and one in French), the discussion on individual topics are continued and deepened. The forum will be held in German. Best regards, Marion Tobler, ETH Zurich and Andrea Weber-Marin, HGK Luzern *DISKUSSIONSFORUM LCA* *ECODESIGN* *10. **Mai 2007, 9:00 - 17:00h, ETH Zentrum, HG F 33.1* Unter dem Begriff Ecodesign werden von Instituten und in der Industrie Prinzipien und Strategien zur Produktentwicklung erarbeitet, die mehr oder weniger auf wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen zur Umweltbelastung basieren. Als Bewertungsgrundlagen für Produkte dienen u.a. Ökobilanzen (LCA), Environmental Product Declaration (EPD),* M*aterial *I*ntensität* p*er *S*ervice-Einheit (MIPS), ökologische Kennzahlen oder allgemeine Umweltstrategien, wovon Strategien und Richtlinien zur Produktentwicklung abgeleitet werden. Die Strategien können rein ökologische, aber auch umfassend nachhaltige Aspekte (Umwelt, Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft) umfassen. Im Umweltbereich beinhaltet dies z.B. einen Ressourcen schonenden Umgang mit Materialien, modulare Bauweise, eine optimierte Lebensdauer, geringe Belastung in der Nutzungsphase, leichte Trennbarkeit von Materialien und Recycling etc. Gesellschaftliche Aspekte spielen immer eine Rolle durch die Marktorientierung der Produkte, wenn dies oft nicht vordergründig ersichtlich ist. So widerspiegeln gestalterischen Leitplanken für Form, Farbe und Ästhetik und vor aber allem Innovation im Hinblick auf Funktionalität und Benutzerprofile die aktuellen Trends unserer Gesellschaft. Die Wirtschaftlichkeit entscheidet in der Regel welche Umwelt und Gesellschaftsaspekte machbar bzw. produzierbar sind. Da Ecodesign stark durch das Produkt und seine Wertschöpfungskette beeinflusst wird, und der Begriff offen definiert ist, lässt sich wenig systematisches, allgemein gültiges Vorgehen erkennen. Deshalb stellt sich die Frage, wieweit Eco Design mit EPD gleich gesetzt werden kann und soll, womit auch der Bezug zur LCA thematisiert wird. Interessant ist auch die Frage inwiefern die EuP Initiative (energy using products), welche das Eco-Design der entsprechenden Produkte fördert, strukturierend wirken kann. Ähnliche Umsetzung kann auch von der IPP (integrated product policy) abgeleitet werden, welche ebenfalls die ganzheitliche Betrachtung der Umweltaspekte von Produkten avisiert. Die Beiträge sollen die kontroversen Ansätze aufzeigen und ausloten im Hinblick auf Systematik, Praktikabilität und Wissenschaftlichkeit. In den drei Workshops (Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch) am Nachmittag werden die Diskussionen themenspezifisch weitergeführt und vertieft. *Mehr Informationen zum 31.
