SOUND ARCHIVING INTERNSHIPS

Apologies for cross posting.

The British Library is pleased to offer its first training internships in sound archiving.  The internships are funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the American Trust for the British Library, The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust and The Ernest Cook Trust and will take place during the 2007/08 academic year.  Internships for periods of two months and five months are available and will take place in the new Centre for Conservation at the British Library’s flagship site in London.

We are seeking to offer these internships to individuals working in an institution with responsibility for the archiving of audiovisual materials who wish to improve their practical skills.  Two-month internships are aimed at those wanting to develop a comprehensive understanding of basic technical skills.  Five-month internships are aimed at those seeking to develop advanced skills and possibly carry out research. Successful candidates will be selected in part on the basis of their ability to demonstrate the benefits of the internship to their professional development.

There are two five-month internships with bursaries of £5,000 and five two-month internships with bursaries of £2,000 available.  The five-month bursary supported by the American Trust for The British Library will be eligible to UK and foreign applicants and those supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Ernest Cook Trust and The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust will only be open to UK citizens.

The internships will combine training along with project work.  A series of training modules will be offered on working with different audio carriers, and will include an introduction to the basics of audio theory, archiving standards and protocols, documentation and copyright.  The projects will be based mostly upon existing audio collections held in the British Library, or exceptionally, on collections held at the intern’s institution and brought into the Centre for Conservation.

Please note that each intern will be supervised by a British Library archivist throughout their internship and training will be monitored on a regular basis.
