Speaking at a conference in Washington, he urged campaigners to focus on the positives of cutting carbon emissions rather than making people feel guilty. The movement must change its image just as he helped transform the "sketchy" reputation of bodybuilding, he said. Mr Schwarzenegger said he was optimistic attitudes to the environment were changing. But, he said, campaigners on climate change needed to shake off the image of being "tree-huggers" and "fanatics". "Environmentalists were no fun, they were like prohibitionists at a fraternity party," he said to laughter. The Republican governor - the former body-builder turned film-star turned politician - invoked images of pumping iron to make his point. Weight-lifting was once considered a pursuit for weirdos, he said, carried out in dungeon-like gyms by people embarrassed to admit to doing it. But with positive marketing "it became mainstream, it became sexy, attractive, and this is exactly what has to happen with the environmental movement", he said. The same thing happened when the John Travolta film Saturday Night Fever made disco-dancing hip and sexy, he added, reaching even his little village in Austria... Scientists predict rising sea levels and changing North Sea storm patterns could combine, leaving the Thames barrier unable to cope with the effects of climate change after 2030. The Unesco report featured 26 case studies, focusing on five areas likely to be affected by climate change - glaciers, marine biodiversity, land biodiversity, archaeological sites and historical settlements. Meanwhile, it emerged that a $150m (£76m) bond has been issued by an arm of the German insurer, Allianz, to protect itself from claims that could arise from companies affected by floods in the City of London and Canary Wharf. "The chance of a UK flood is lower than a US hurricane ... but our models show that there [would be] a bigger loss exposure," Amer Ahmed, the Allianz Global Corporate and Speciality chief risk officer, said, according to the Financial Times. Storm Warning :- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6524017.stm Warning of bad hurricane season : Experts are again predicting a busy Atlantic hurricane season, with up to 17 named tropical storms forming - nine of which could become hurricanes. At least one major storm is expected to make landfall in the US during the 1 June-30 November season, Colorado State University forecasters said. Last year, leading forecasters wrongly predicted a bad hurricane season. However the record-breaking 2005 season saw 15 hurricanes, including Katrina which devastated New Orleans. Another forecaster, London-based Tropical Storm Risk, has likewise predicted 17 tropical storms, nine of them hurricanes, for the 2007 season. ============================================================ _________________________________________________________________ Txt a lot?
