Dear Ian, I believe that the basal mandible of lion is rounded and if placed on a level surface can be rocked. The tiger, however, has a straight mandibular base and cannot be rocked. This from a very old tv program (probably David Attenborough). I know of no other simple criteria. Best wishes, Ian
