Overall Purpose of the job

The Festival of Science Officer is responsible for assisting in the running of the BA’s Annual Festival of Science in September working to the Festival of Science Manager and alongside the Science Events Assistant in the months leading up to the Festival.


Key responsibilities

*	Taking the lead on the production of the Festival of Science Programme and advance materials
*	Liaising closely with the organisers and speakers within the Festival to determine specific requirements
*	Providing key staff at the host venue with information regarding the requirements for venues in use during the Festival
*	Managing the audit and allocation of accommodation, audio-visual and other logistical requirements for the Festival of Science
*	Updating programme content and other information on the relevant parts of the BA website
*	Working with the Festival Manager and key partners to ensure that the marketing campaign for the Festival is co-ordinated and appropriate
*	Providing support for the Programme Planning Committee and for Sections of the Association
*	Liaising closely with event organisers over the audience, style and formats of their events encouraging maximum interaction with and involvement of audiences
*	Liaising closely with the wider team in the division and across other divisions at all levels
*	Assisting the development of the Festival of Science as appropriate for the 21st century
*	Assisting the Manager in producing estimates and budgets
*	 Other tasks as reasonably required by the line manager or Section Director. 

Key working relationships

The postholder will be expected to liaise with colleagues across the organisation, but is likely to develop significant working relationships with the following people:

*	Festival of Science Manager
*	Director of Programmes
*	Young Peoples Programme Officer (Promotions and Events)
*	Supporter Development Assistant


Person Specification

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

*	Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Access
*	Some knowledge of design software, Quark and Photoshop in particular
*	An ability to prepare clear, concise briefing materials and instructions
*	Excellent interpersonal skills
*	Some experience and skill in event management
*	Experience of working on numerous tasks in parallel
*	Successful experience of liaising closely with numerous stakeholders. 
*	Education to degree level or equivalent 
*	An interest in working in a science-based organisation
*	That they are comfortable dealing with people at all levels within the organisation and externally
*	Some knowledge of the science and/or science communication communities 
*	An ability to work independently and as part of a team


Terms and conditions

The position is offered at a salary of circa £21,000 p.a. depending on experience.

From time to time the job entails working extended hours and occasional weekends, for which no overtime payments are made. However, the BA does operate a time off in lieu policy. Applicants should note that hours may be particularly demanding, including weekends, during the Festival of Science in September.
